East Orange is a city located in Essex County, New Jersey. Originally part of Newark and known as the “Newark Mountains,” residents voted to adopt the name Orange for the area, eventually seceding from Newark in 1806. Soon after Orange was incorporated as a city, it fractured into smaller communities, including East Orange. Much of the city is known for its spacious, suburban feel characterized by wide, tree-lined streets and stately homes in many neighborhoods. However, East Orange is also home to a well-developed core business area with luxury high-rises and commercial buildings along Main Street and Central Avenue, leading the area to be called the “Fifth Avenue of New Jersey.” Today, East Orange is designated as a “Transit Village,” with transportation options providing links to Newark and Midtown Manhattan.
Criminal defense lawyers typically work on an hourly fee basis, although alternative fee arrangements may be agreed upon for simpler cases such as DUI. This means that the attorney will be paid based on the amount of time they spend working on the client’s case. Many criminal defense attorneys will request that a client pay a retainer up front at the start of the case. As the attorney performs work on the client’s case, they will charge their hourly fees against the retainer and deduct funds. Any portion of the retainer that remains at the end of the client’s case is returned to the client. While hiring a private criminal defense lawyer can seem expensive, depending on the complexity and severity of your charges, it is hard to put a price on your freedom and reputation, which you may be able to protect with experienced, dedicated legal representation on your side.
In New Jersey, adult criminal convictions will permanently remain on your record unless you petition the court to expunge the conviction from your record, which means the record of the conviction will be sealed from public access. Only certain types of criminal offenses may be expunged, and you will need to remain offense-free following your conviction or incarceration for a certain period before you become eligible for expungement.
