About Mahwah, NJ

Mahwah is a township located in Bergen County, New Jersey. Originally called Hohokus Township, Mahwah gets its name from the Lenape Native American word “mawewi,” which translates to “meeting places” or “places where paths meet.”  Mahwah is near the Ramapo Mountains and the Ramapo River, and the township has multiple county and state parks entirely or partially within the township borders. Mahwah was previously the site of a Ford Motor Company assembly plant, which closed in 1980. Frequently Asked Questions about Criminal Defense in Mahwah, NJ

How much does a Mahwah criminal defense attorney cost?

Most criminal defense attorneys charge an hourly fee for their services. In many cases, attorneys will ask for an upfront retainer. As the attorney performs work on the client’s case, they will charge their hourly fees against this retainer. Because the retainer is the client’s property, any portion of the retainer left over at the end of the case is returned to the client. Although hiring a criminal defense attorney may seem expensive, there is no price you can put on your reputation, freedom, and future.

Should I talk to a criminal lawyer before agreeing to answer questions from the police?

Yes. You have the constitutional right to consult with a lawyer prior to answering any questions from the police and to have your lawyer present during such questioning. If you are detained or arrested by the police, you should immediately inform the police that you want to consult with an attorney. Once you have invoked your right to legal counsel, police typically may not begin questioning you until you have had a chance to speak with an attorney.
